I want to go home to the people - musical theater

A dramatic and harrowing story about young love, the right to love, the right to exist and the fight against fascism.
Gunvor Hofmo was a Norwegian author and one of the foremost poets of the post-war period. In 1942, her lover, the Jewish refugee Ruth Maier, was arrested and sent to the Auschwitz extermination camp.

In the wake of this, Gunvor Hofmo distilled loss, grief and loneliness in her poetry, and Susanna Wallumrød's musical settings of this are the basis for the Hedda Prize-nominated musical theatre play I Want to Go Home to the People.

Here, Gunvor attempts to reconstruct what actually happened together with an imaginary Ruth. The performance takes place in a dreamy and abstract landscape, where we gain insight into Gunvor's longings and mental ill health, with excerpts from medical records and medication, from her stay at Gaustad psychiatric hospital.

Together with scenography, lighting, sound and music, Susanna Wallumrød, Helga Guren and Stina Stjern give us an insight into Gunvor's poems, Susanna's songs, and the story of Gunvor and Ruth.
