Welcome to ImproLab with Jan Ivar Ekroll and Anna Thu Schmidt

ImproLab is an improvisation laboratory for artists from all disciplines and the community of movement and sound enthusiasts in Trondheim. The Lab wants to offer creative approaches to certain topics that can be explored interdisciplinary through improvisation - a place to inspire and to connect!

This ImproLab is a meeting between musician Jan Ivar Ekroll and dance artist Anna Thu Schmidt that explores the interplay between the movement of the body and the movement of sound in a church space. Jan Ivar previously attended several ImproDans events as a dance participant and finds the interaction between the freely evolving music and movement intriguing. “Exploring the room, body, mind, music and the collective experience through movement has been a rewarding experience for me as a dancer, and in turn I grow as a musician. I’m now interested in taking the experience back to music and coming at it from the musician's side, while bringing my experiences from the dance into the creation of collective improvisation.” In this special ImproLab at Lademoen Kirke we will explore the trialogue between the music, dance and space through improvisation.Everyone is free to dance alone or in contact with others, sit and watch, make sounds or relax with their eyes closed and listen to the music.

The event includes a workshop part with set exercises followed by an open jam as a playground for diverse artistic expressions. Dance experience is not required. Musicians are very welcome to join and to bring their own instruments.
The event will be held in English.
It is a FREE EVENT supported by Kulturrådet and Lademoen Kirke.
Doors open 15 minutes before the event and will be closed by the start of the event.

ImproDans Trondheim wants to offer an open, free, and safe space for movement and sound exploration and a playful approach to improvisation.

Bio: Jan Ivar Ekroll is a multi-instrumentalist and composer who has been living in Trondheim since 2013. An alumni of Jazzlinja, his musical interests range from free improvisation to singer/songwriter, with a heavy dose of swinging jazz. He plays trumpet, piano, guitar, bass and sings in different constellations, always looking for authentic interaction with others through music.

Anna Thu Schmidt is a dance artist with a passion for dance improvisation, interdisciplinary collaborations, site-specific performances, and integrated dance. She holds a B.A. in Dance in Education (ArtEZ University of the Arts Arnhem/Netherlands) and M.A. in Dance Studies (NTNU). Anna leads ImproDans Trondheim and Samtidsdans for voksne Trondheim, and started up PRAXIS Trondheim and Ecstatic Dance in Trondheim. annathuschmidt.com
