German Romantic music from three strong personalities.
When Johannes Brahms performed his own compositions for the pianist-composer couple Clara and Robert Schumann, it was the start of an artistic collaboration and one of the most famous ménages à trois in music history.
In Grieg’s Villa Ingrid Andsnes, pianist and consummate communicator, presents music from these three artists who greatly influenced German Romantic piano music – and one another.
Clara Schumann was one of the most influential pianists in Europe in the nineteenth century, and she made considerable efforts to ensure that Robert Schumann’s music was performed in the greatest European concert halls. She was also recognised as a composer in her time.
Johannes Brahms came to the Schumann home as a young, handsome composer on the cusp of his career. The Schumann couple immediately took to him, both as a person and as a composer. He quickly became part of their household, also as an infatuated suitor and support for Clara when Robert became ill and died. Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms had a lifelong close friendship, frequently seeking support and advice from each other.
