Is Nynorsk based on all dialects or primarily on dialects from Western Norway? Is Nynorsk a national language or a regional language? Is Nynorsk a minority language? Is Nynorsk a language at all? These are questions that are central to the public conversation about what New Norwegian is and should be. The answer to the questions is often characterized by what the respondent wants New Norwegian to be. The questions are related to the different ways in which New Norwegian has acquired legitimacy throughout history, and how this legitimacy has been challenged. In this lecture, Jorunn Simonsen Thingnes takes as his point of departure preconceptions about New Norwegian in the present and discusses how these preconceptions about and the legitimation of New Norwegian affect the status of the language.
