Violin concertos by Mendelssohn and Bach.
Violinist Gidon Kremer is one of this year's Crescendo mentors. The Crescendo programme connects experienced musicians with aspiring young instrumentalists. For this concert Norwegian-Swedish Johan Dalene has studied Mendelssohn's melodious Violin Concerto in D minor alongside his mentor. Kremer's own recording of the work from 1989 is still a favourite with many music lovers.
Kremerata Baltica, the ensemble which Kremer started as a 50th birthday present to himself, provides the orchestral part of the concerto and also performs two works from the Baltic countries.
The concert concludes with Bach double Violin Concerto, one of the composer's most sublime – and popular – works, with Crescendo musicians Sonoko Miriam Welde and Johan Dalene. Welde has been a favourite among the Festival audience for several years, and has won the Virtuos competition and Statoil's talent scholarship in classical music.
