John Butcher & Ståle Liavik Solberg/ Cortex

Overview

A double dose of avant-garde jazz at Victoria.

The British saxophone player John Butcher has a PhD in theoretical particle physics, but luckily he choose to play music. Although he is a bit younger than Evan Parker, he belongs to the same golden generation of free improvising avant-gardists. Ståle Liavik Solberg is one of the most prominent members of the Norwegian free jazz scene.

John Butcher – saxophone, Ståle Liavik Solberg – drums

Cortex has become an institution in Norwegian free jazz. The title of their most recent album, stolen from one of the many rave reviews the band has received, sums it up pretty accurately:  Avant-garde party music! This is unmistakable and hard-hitting 60s freebag in the spirit Ornettes and Don Cherry – still with a notable Nordic and contemporary style

Thomas Johansson – trumpet, Kristoffer Alberts – saxophone, Ola Høyer – bass, Gard Nilssen – drums
