Kalaallit Nunaat – The History of the Greenlandic Bible's

Overview

An exciting exhibition about the northernmost country in the world.

In the exhibition «Kalaallit Nunaat – The History of the Greenlandic Bible», one can see the first Bible translation by Hans and Paul Egede from 1766, flip through the most recent translation, and learn about Greenland's culture and history.

The exhibition's aim is to awaken questions about who translated the Bible, as well as the Bible's role both in culture and in language. Many copies published between 1766 and nowadays are exhibited. The introduction of the Bible on Greenland was this nation's first encounter with the written word, and marks a decisive turning point where Greenland became a part of European globalisation. This heavy piece of history is nevertheless important in understanding Norway's role in colonisation, and the Bible's role in the meeting of two cultures.

In the museum, leaflets with articles about Greenland's history, Bible history, language encounters and cultural encounters, are available.
