Katarina Barruk is known as one of Sábmie's most respected artists. Over the past few years, Katarina has toured Europe with a number of critically acclaimed concerts and her performance at the 2023 Øya Festival was described as ̈Øya's biggest revelation ̈ by The Line of Best Fit.
Barruk's unique, distinctive voice, combined with a steadfast stage presence, creates a space of vulnerability and strength unlike any other. She delivers a strong, yet deeply down-to-earth blend of pop music, traditional yoik and improvisation.
Katarina sings in her native language, Ume Sámi. The language is on UNESCO's Red List of Critically Endangered Languages, but many Ume Sámi are reclaiming the language.
I don't use Ume Sámi in music to prove a point, it's more about the fact that I can be myself. Making music in Ume Sámi is a way to invite friends and audiences into my universe, where Ume Sámi is the norm, highly relevant and alive.
Barruk's powerful performances make a strong impression, which has earned her a solid audience over the past few years. It is no coincidence that she has played at forward-thinking festivals such as Iceland Airwaves, Reeperbahn and WOMEX in the past year.
In 2023 and 2024, she has also played her own music with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Her second album, Ruhttuo (Boreal Forest) with producers Arnljot Nordvik and Christo Stangness, solidified the singer's reputation as an innovative artist who likes to go her own way.
