From 17 August, Norwegian Opera & Ballet: Moving romance, slapstick humour and intensely beautiful music
L’Elisir d’Amore gives us a combination of moving romance, slapstick humour and intensely beautiful music. It is a story of love – and alcohol’s – wonderful intoxication.
Director Oliver Mears lets this comedy of intrigues develop in a British college during the 1970s.
The slightly nerdy student Nemorino falls head over heels for the young teacher Adina, as she reads Tristan and Isolde to the class, and about the love potion which brings them together. But it appears that Nemorino’s case is hopeless, particularly when Belcore appears, with the aim of recruiting healthy young bodies to service. Adina seems only to be interested in the macho sergeant. This is when the quack, Dulcamara appears and suggests a quick fix in the the form of a love potion. Is this the reason for Nemorino’s sudden popularity with the girls? And will he win the heart of Adina before it is too late? Or rather, is it her who will win him?
