La poupée aux pensées trop dangereuses / The doll with thoughts that are too dangerous

Overview

Norske Grafikere present a selection of Marianne Heske's grafic prints from the 1970's. Heske's well-known doll head plays the lead role in the exhibited prints, and are presented in a way which refers to universal and timeless problems tied to identity, individuality and and our place in society.

The doll's head has played an important role in Heske's art ever since 1971, when she discovered a box full of them at a flea market on the east side of Paris, where she lived at the time.

In the print which the title, La poupée aux pensées trop dangereuses, refers to, the doll's head is placed in a golden cage with a butterfly trying to escape. What are these too dangerous thoughts? The thought of humans unfreely meeting norms and conventions, is a theme which is heavily featured in Heske's art. Many of the works exhibited point to our innate need to define and categorise ourselves and other people in a way that negatively impacts both personal individuality and a heterogenic society. Several of the works address the modern human's featurelessness at a title level, as in Peut-on tuer quelqu’un qui est déjà mort? – can you kill someone who is already dead?

Throughout her career, Heske has expressed her art through video. photos, sculptures, installations and performances, and the chosen medium always has a function.
