Lars Winnerbäck is one of Sweden’s best and most acclaimed artists, and he is also one of the most popular. His texts are so relevant that many fans have them tatooed on their bodies.
There are songs about longing elsewhere, away from the rulebook. There are songs about coming home, about the need to be freed from guilt, and about the dream of a higher dimension in life.
Winnerbäck is a master of portraying atmosphere, the buildings, the cement, the light at 4 o’clock in October. He puts melancholy into words, the feeling of impermanence, that everything will come to an end. He sings a lament «for a mother who sickens and dies / for a child that never was // An elegy for roads not taken / For a time that just passes and never returns.» And at the same time he sings of hope that refuses to die: «We would tackle everything, we would never say no.»
Since1996, Lars Winnerbäck has recorded eleven studio albums, eight collections, as well as live recordings and the recent documentary Et slags liv. He has given live performances for more that 2,5 million people in Norway and Sweden, and has sold more than half a million records. In the spring, he will release a completely new album.
One of the many fans with tatoos of Winnerbäck texts, says to Dagens Nyheter: «I feel humble and grateful that his music exists and that I can wear it on my body. It feels great somehow, that music can mean so much.»
We can look forward to a warm, honest and inspiring evening in The Archbishop’s Courtyard with big format Lars Winnerbäck on Friday 3. August, at 20.30.
