Adam Hickox gives us the Norwegian premiere of a new viola concerto written by one of the most played contemporary composers of our time, Magnus Lindberg, in exciting harmony with Sibelius’s magnificent Fifth Symphony.

Lindberg’s viola concerto shows us the warm and expressive sound of this beautiful instrument and its great scope for possibilities to the fullest. The concerto is written for tonight’s soloist, Lawrence Power, and we can expect emotional expressiveness and masterful interpretations of a work that has been described as “bathed in light” and with “a very appealing lightness.”

Sibelius' Symphony No. 5 is an epic masterpiece that opens and unfolds in an endlessly untouched Nordic landscape where a flock of swans gracefully take to their wings and "circle above us before they disappear into the sunlight like a shining silver ribbon."

The concert opens with Carl Nielsen's famous Helios Overture that follows the sun's path across the sky from the caress of the first rays at dawn to the tender embrace of dusk.
