Overview

Donizetti’s opera shows us crumbling castle hallways and dark secrets. Lucia di Lammermoor is a psychological drama about inner and outer demons. It builds upon Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor, which is based on a true story.

Enrico Ashton wants to save the family’s honour and fortune by marrying his sister to Arturo Bucklaw. But Lucia is in love with someone else – none other than her brother’s enemy, Edgardo Ravenswood. And so the stage is set for a battle between love and duty, personal feelings and familial relationships.

When the male-dominated society she lives in denies her both her freedom and the one she loves, Lucia takes a bloody revenge.
