Gustav Mahler completed his number 4 symphony in the year 1900. In this he composes the poem "Das himmlische Leben" with soprano soloist in the final movement. The poem deals with a boy's performance of life in heaven, and is from the larger folk poem collection "Des Knaben Wunderhorn" which was the inspiration for Mahler's first four symphonies.
Mahler's 4th Symphony is in its character somewhat less grandiose than the previous ones, and with much larger more delicate and chamber musical parts. As a student of Arnold Schönberg, Erwin Stein transcribed this symphony in 1921 into the chamber format of Schönberg's "Association for Private Music Performances", and this arrangement has become increasingly recognized in that it brings out slightly different qualities and details in the symphony than the original with its very rich orchestration.
