Marlene Freitas - Bacchae, prelude to a purge

22 and 23 September, Dansens Hus: Greek tragedy becomes intense dance

Greek tragedy becomes intense dance. Visually stunning, existentialist and sometimes crazy.

Marlene Monteiro Freitas, born in Cap Verde, has set Europe ablaze with her performances. Now she is adapting the classical Greek tragedy The Baccae by Euripides. In Baccae - prelude to a purge she has updated the classical play with the help of eight dancers and five trumpeters and created an intense and innovative performance that clearly shows her signature. She contrasts order and reason with irrationality and intoxication to create an existential trip that is visually inspired by the carnival in Cap Verde, mythology and pop-culture.
