Martha's House is a nightmarish haunted house, haunted by petty-bourgeois expectations and old ideals.
Here we meet the pathetic sadist Helmut and the disillusioned masochist Martha, trapped in a destructive relationship where love becomes both coercion and longing.
The performance is inspired by Rainer Werner Fassbinder's film Martha (1974), Cornell Woolrich's short story For the Rest of Her Life and the theory of hauntology, i.e. the idea that the ideals of the past never disappear, but return to haunt the present.
With cinematic means, dark humor and precise stagecraft, a nightmare of burgundy curtains and suffocating dreams is woven.
Martha's House is both a horror drama and a political commentary on our time, a story about how the dream of control, nuclear family and "the perfect home" can become a prison.
A beautiful and uncomfortable portrait of the dark sides of love, and of a society that is constantly haunted by its own values.
Location: Hall 2
Duration: approx. 85 min
Language: Norwegian, English and Swedish
