Star team from New York performs at Nasjonal Jazzscene
The American guitarist Mary Halvorson has been described as ‘the least predictable improv musician in New York' - and that tells a lot! Ever since she emerged on the jazz scene in the early 2000s, she has consistently shun all kinds of cliches and rather formed guitar jazz in her own image with a semi-acoustic sound, slightly twisted, floating and mild at times, hard and edgy at others.
Halvorson has steadily expanded her ensembles from the trio she had with Hébert and Ches Smith. First to a quintet, then a septet and now to an octet that exhibits the timbre of a small big band combined with the flexibility of a quartet.
Mary Halvorson - guitar, Dave Ballou - trumpet, Jon Irabagon - sax, Ingrid Laubrock - sax, Jacob Garchik - trombone, Susan Alcorn - pedal steel guitar, John Hébert - bass, Tomas Fujiwara - drums
