Mellom verdener – lytteverk i Domkirkens klokketårn – Bergen kirkeautunnale 2025
The work was written for the unique listening space Jiennagoahti on Fløyen in Bergen, and consists of original joik, song, electronic sounds, church organ, and church bells, all recorded in Bergen Cathedral. The work was commissioned for the Borealis festival and now returns to the Cathedral for a unique listening experience in the church's bell tower.
Can music exist between worlds? Between Sami and Norwegian, between tradition and modernity, between heaven and hell?
The world seems to be becoming increasingly polarized, with camps often standing irreconcilably against each other without room for anything in between. Närva, who comes from a coastal Sami and Kven family subjected to harsh Norwegianization policies, finds himself precisely between Sami, Norwegian, and Kven identity. Similarly, the Sami joik has been demonized by the church for centuries, while one can hear the sound and ornamentation of the joik in the Laestadian hymn tradition. What kind of music can arise in this space between the hymn and the joik? In the space between worlds?
The listening- pice will take place in the Cathedral's bell tower, with views over large parts of the city. As is often the case to get a spectacular view, one must first climb and struggle up, no exceptions here. The stairs up are narrow and steep, claustrophobia and fear of heights are not recommended. Once at the top, there is plenty of seating and enough views for everyone!
