Starting here, Thomas Dausgaard performs and records Bruckner's monolithic symphonies with the Bergen Philharmonic, each of them paired in concert with music by Beethoven.
Dausgaard begins with one of Bruckner's most fascinating and unusual creations. In the Sixth Symphony, Bruckner's pounding gothic structures take on a translucent elegance – serene, tender, lofty and noble.
While Bruckner's symphony took its inspiration from the past, it was ahead of its time. The same might be said of Beethoven's First Piano Concerto. It takes 100 bars for Beethoven's piano to make its first entry. But when it eventually arrives, the crisp, concentrated conversation that follows represents Beethoven at his most exquisite.
