INX 103 is a low-key and entertaining festival highlight, an improvised dance piece seeking coinciding movements, performed by a dynamic and carefree duo. József Trefeli and Gábor Varga mix traditional rhythms and rituals with contemporary dance in this moving performance.
One was born in Australia and the other in the former Soviet Union, yet they stand shoulder to shoulder as descendants from Hungarians (in the Hungarian diaspora). They meet through dance, an art form they've learned on opposite sides of the globe. This way, their mutual pasts align.
They share a rich vocabulary of body percussion and folk dance and even the most fundamental rhythms are of a complex character. Prepare for clapping, slaps, heel kicking, loud jumps, stomping and kicks guaranteed to set off sparks.
When two people say the same thing by coincidence, many languages have a word one has to say in a hurry in order to keep bad spirits away. In French the word is "chips", in English "jinx", while the Hungarians say "103". For children such coincidences initiate a game, where the goal is to be the first person to shout the word. In Bergen kids say "kongesmurf". Now you own the other person.
