Moonrise – Marlene Dumas and Edvard Munch

Overview

An artistic encounter between Edvard Munch and the Dutch artist Marlene Dumas.

Marlene Dumas (b. 1953) is known for paintings with strong expressions, whether they are oil on canvas or aquarelle on paper. She creates her motifs with rapid, seemingly spontaneous strokes of thin paint. Dumas has an expressive and direct approach to her paintings, which usually are portraits or figure compositions.

Dumas has nurtured a fascination for Edvard Munch for many years. One of Dumas’ favourite works by Munch is a series of lithographs called Alfa and Omega (1908), which she saw when she visited the Munch museum for the first time in 1981. The main themes of this burlesque fable is also part of this exhibition, as it centers around innocence that turns into loneliness, seduction, eroticism, anxiety and death.

According to Dumas, it was via her fellow painter René Daniëls (f. 1950) that she learned to see Munch. She therefore includes works by Daniëls, which you can see side by side with her own and Munch’s paintings.
