Norwegian Radio Orchestra - Chen & Glaser

The Norwegian Radio Orchestra has wanted the Taiwanese-American conductor Mei-Ann Chen to return for a long time, and when she now fianlly arrives, she does with a program with a distinct American sound.

George Whitefield Chadwick is probably the most unknown composer, a representative of a number of significant 19th-century American composers educated in New England. He also studied in Leipzig with Carl Reinecke (as Grieg did), but there is a clear American tone in the music of this prolific composer.

Although Antonín Dvořák was a Czech composer, his cello concerto also has American connections. It was written in New York in 1894. He was in the United States, invited to help build the American music scene, but he was probably as much inspired by the music that already existed there, not least folk music and negro spirituals. The cello concert is somewhere between American inspiration and homesickness for the Czech Republic. Soloist is KORK's own, soslocellist Ernst Simon Glaser.

Aaron Copland is well known, as one of the foremost American composers, but his opera The Tender Land, with action from the Midwest is not among the most performed here at home. The opera got off to a slightly bumpy start, before settling into the American repertoire, and the suite stands, like Jubilee on KORK's repertoire for the first time. Copland's music has more than anything become the sound of the American, a sound that is copied by many film music composers when large prairie landscapes are to be sounded.
