Norwegian Radio Orchestra - Ragtimes and Habaneras

Winds, percussion and harp dominates in Store studio. Melodic percussion is in focus with Norwegian Radio Orchestra's alternating solo percussionist Christian Lundqvist as soloist. One of the works is by one of music history's brilliant, and almost forgotten, greats, George Hamilton Green (1893-1970). He was a versatile musical talent already as a child, but it was as a xylophone virtuoso that he became a celebrity in the United States, with countless concerts and recordings. He also left behind a large amount of compositions that really demand his musician. Lundqvist has shown his skill in so-called melodic percussion on several occasions, and with his study background from Juillard in New York, we believe he is the right person to give this music the melodic swing it deserves.

The German composer Hans Werner Henze's ragtimes (and habanereas) draw inspiration from further south, from Cuba and his own opera «La Cubana», arranged for winds by Henze's student Marcel Wengler. Here, rhythms, humor and contemporary sound meet, written by one of the greatest composers of our time.
