Ola Kvernberg's Steamdome is rolling out on the road with new music and a blood-thirsty crew. With Steamdome, Ola Kvernberg has seriously taken the step from the polite jazz congregation to club stages and dance floors through three albums and euphoric concerts.
With the third and currently final part of the Steamdome beast, all inhibitions are released in a project that has already proven to be even bigger, more powerful and tougher. "Steamdome III: Beyond The End" had its monumental premiere in front of over 3,000 people in the twilight hours of late summer 2023. In medieval surroundings in Borggården in Trondheim, Ola Kvernberg Steamdome closed the Olavsfestdagene together with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, and breathed life into the project's third chapter. In June 2024, "Steamdome III: Beyond The End" was released as an album.
When “Steamdome I” saw the light of day – first as a commissioned work for Trondheim Jazzfest and Moldejazz in 2016 – Kvernberg described the project as a kind of mid-life crisis, the musician’s version of buying a motorcycle. Since then, it has taken on a larger and broader significance, as his working band and main musical project. When the album came out in 2017, it landed a surprising tenth place on the list of Norway’s best-selling vinyl records in Norway, and one of the most sensational commercial breakthroughs for a Norwegian jazz musician was a fact. Where “Steamdome I” was quite punky, jammy and loose, “Steamdome II” from 2021 was tighter and more thoroughly composed. But anyone who fell for the first two parts will also recognize themselves in “Steamdome III” – even with a symphony orchestra, the rhythm is central. The same framework lies at the bottom, no matter how far Kvernberg takes the project. The band still consists of the country's best rhythmic musicians and rhythm is so central to the project that it is inevitable that it will also be a mainstay in "Steamdome III".
