Olavsfest lecture: art and power in a historic perspective

The old Bishop's residence was built to "be worthy of a civil servant". Putting up beautiful buildings that were richly decorated was part of having a position in society. Artists all over Europe created art commissioned by those in power.

Is the use of art in today's public spaces an attempt to detach art from power? Or is it still the case that there are close ties between the two?

Art history student Torstein Olav Eriksen will talk about how art has developed in interaction with those in power throughout the ages and how art and power have always been linked.
