5 April, Norwegian Opera & Ballet: Mahler's colossal masterpiece
Mahler’s Symphony no. 3 has been described as enormous and magnificent. The Opera Orchestra, the Opera Chorus, the Children’s Chorus and soloist Tone Kummervold are ready to perform this great work. The composer himself called it his “monster symphony”, albeit with some irony, after having worked on the piece from 1893 to 1896.
This is Mahler’s longest symphony. The six movements describe the six days of Creation, and contain everything from powerful marches to innocent choirs of angels. The composer took inspiration for his text from the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, and the German collection of poetry Des Knaben Wunderhorn.
American Erik Nielsen conducts. Since 2015 he has been Director of the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, as well as being Musical Director at Theatre Basel.
