3 November, Cosmopolite: Pop music from France's "little Algeria"
Pop music from France's "little Algeria"
Orchestre National de Barbés gets its name from the area around the Barbès - Rochechouart metro station in Paris. The orchestra was founded in the middle of the 1990s by Algerian bassist Youcef Boukalla who already was considered a star in the French-Algerian underground. The band insist on that they are playin pop music, even if others put them into other boxes, like folk and arabesque.
If you look at the beginnings of the traditional Algerian folk music raï in the 1920 in the harbor town of Oran, then you have to agree with them. Even if Orchestre National de Barbès have added their own sound in the mix, their material stems from a deeply urban genre, that was created among the youth that wanted freedom to express themselves in new ways and took whatever inspiration that came their way. Pop music bar none - and an unforgettable experience.
The concert is part of the 2018 Oslo World Festival.
