From the heart of European art music to national roots.
The Strad praises Ragnhild Hemsing for the emotional depth of her playing, and BBC Music Magazine is enchanted by the sound world she creates in Lasse Thoresen's composition Yr.
Hemsing has won an award for her Beethoven interpretation in the composer's native city, and the first work in the programme places this concert squarely in the heart of European art music. She is accompanied by Tor Espen Aspaas, who has not only played and recorded Beethoven: his three-year research project at the Norwegian Academy of Music was all about the great composer's creative processes.
They also play a small impressionist work by Lili Boulanger, who died at the age of 24, and impressionist master composer Debussy's quirky Violin Sonata. They eventually return to their Norwegian roots with music by the legendary Ole Bull – beautiful melodies and a manifestation of violinistic virtuosity.
