Folk music meets jazz when Ragnhild Hemsing meets three of Norway's leading improvisational musicians.
Few, if any, manage to fuse Norwegian folk music and classical music like Ragnhild Hemsing. The 36-year-old from Valdres is a virtuoso on both the violin and the Hardanger fiddle, and during Olavsfest we will hear her play both during two concerts with very different starting points.
In Nidaros Cathedral, Ragnhild Hemsing plays in a quartet format, together with Mathias Eick (trumpet), Steinar Raknes (double bass) and Terje Isungset (percussion) - three of Norway's leading jazz musicians. The repertoire is based on the album "Vetra" which was released in 2023, but is constantly evolving.
- The concert and the concept of the VETRA quartet can probably best be described as folk jazz, says Ragnhild Hemsing about the music that was originally based on Ludvig Mathias Lindeman's recordings of folk tunes from Valdres.
- Through the project, I have had the opportunity to draw from incredibly fine material that is almost never used, and to give it a modern setting where we can bring out new nuances and tonal worlds, says Hemsing, who has also written new, original songs for the VETRA project. The concert in Nidaros Cathedral will therefore contain some completely new music, both self-composed and traditional music, but still with Lindemann's notes as the main element.
- It is a true joy to play with such talented improvisational musicians! With them I get incredible freedom on stage. I never quite know what I am going to do, which is both challenging and exciting, says Hemsing. The concert will be the first she does in Nidaros Cathedral with her own project.
Combining two or more musical expressions has become something of a hallmark for Ragnhild Hemsing.
- The communication aspect has always been important to me. One can say that and at the same time have great respect for the traditions. That's why I'm concerned with preserving and conserving, but at the same time I want to do musical pioneering work and find new possibilities and combinations, says Hemsing.
- Thinking up new concepts and programs has in a way become my musical identity. That's why I feel that what I do is both modern and relevant.
