Overview

"Daughter of the Regiment" - "La Fille du Regiment" by Gaetano Donizetti premiered in Paris in 1840. It is a comic opera in 2 acts with text by J.H.de Saint-Georges and J-F Alfred Bayard. It has been performed in Norway only twice before: at the Christiania Theater in 1867 and at the Kristiansund Opera in 1984.

The action takes place originally in 1805 in Tyrol during the French siege. Marie, the daughter of a soldier and a noble lady, was abandoned as a child and adopted by a French military regiment. She grows up with the soldiers as her family, and later falls in love with the Tyrolean peasant boy Tonio. The idyll is apparently complete until Mary's Aunt Marquise of Berkenfeldt shows up. She tries to teach her both to sing and to act like a "lady". But to no use. Then she decides that Marie should be married to the Duchess of Crakentorp's son.

Marie finds life unbearable until the whole regiment with Tonio in the lead comes to the rescue. As the Marquise sees how happy the young couple are, she completely melts and lets them have each other. A happy ending!

Italian director Jacopo Spirei is set to stage it all. He commutes between Florence and Oslo where he is a professor at the School of the Arts. Jacopo knows his Donizetti and is a source of humor and resilient ideas.

The cast is about to materialize and Lina Johnson - currently as Gilda in Rigoletto at DNO & B - has accepted the lead as Marie.
