Reindeer – The Southern Sami way
Learn about Reindeer during the Trondheim Food Festival 2025! Eva Nordfjell from Rørosrein belongs to a Southern Sami reindeer herding family based in Røros. The family is part of a sijte, which is several Sami families who jointly manage large reindeer herds. The reindeer migrate across vast mountain areas in search of food, and are moved to different parts of the mountain according to the seasons. These animals are basically wild, so this is work that the Sami have developed and continued over hundreds of years.
At Rørosrein, they have a production facility where they combine traditional Sami use of reindeer meat, with new innovation and new flavors. The Sami have long traditions of fermenting, curing and smoking reindeer meat, and Eva Nordfjell harvests her own traditional herbs, such as the aromatic angelica, to flavor reindeer sausages and other products.
Come and hear the rich history of the Southern Sami people, an indigenous people with roots in Trøndelag, and taste reindeer meat made the Sami way. In Røros you can visit Rørosreins Gåetie, a traditional Sami dwelling built in the forest. It is a wooden structure with a fireplace in the middle. Maybe you will feel the warmth of the fire and the closeness to the South Sami culture when Eva shares her stories?
