Restoration principles and pilgrim marks: presentation of two master's projects
On June 24, we have invited two master's students in art history at NTNU to present their research areas. Anna Kvitkva's thesis is about pilgrim marks and their significance in medieval pilgrimages to Nidaros, while Torstein Olav Eriksen looks more closely at the restoration principles that have prevailed during the restoration of Nidaros Cathedral.
---
THE RESCUERS OF NIDAROS CATHEDRAL?
What happens when conflicting conservation views collide during restoration? During the restoration of Nidaros Cathedral, restoration principles were still under development, and many buildings underwent a "trial and error" method. Using the Chapter House, the octagon and the west front, we will see how these principles changed over the years.
Torstein Olav Eriksen is a trained art historian and has worked with modern interpretations of Gothic throughout his degree. In addition to art, he is also a trained photographer, and this has shaped his entry into art. Where the visual has a strong place in his work and interpretations.

ART, CULT AND PILGRIMAGE: ST. OLAV'S MARKERS AND THE MEDIEVAL TRONDHEIM
The lecture deals with St. Olav's pilgrim marks and their significance in the context of the medieval pilgrimage to Trondheim. Through these small curious objects, both religious practice, identity and the city's role as a central pilgrimage destination in medieval Europe are illuminated.
Anna Kvitka is an art historian with a particular interest in medieval art, church art and folk art. She is currently writing a master's thesis in art history on St. Olav's pilgrim marks, and brings with her exciting insight into the meeting of faith and art in medieval visual culture.
---
Light refreshments between the lectures. Doors open at 6:45 PM.
The event is free, but get your ticket at Hoopla.
It is open to everyone, but we encourage everyone to join the team and support our work to disseminate and preserve our common cultural heritage!
You can easily register at www.fortidsminneforeningen.no />
NB! Please let us know if you are unable to use your ticket, so someone else will have the opportunity instead.
