On Saturday, February 22nd between 11 and 14, before the wooden ski race at Tjønna, you can meet wooden ski maker Ole-Kristian at the ski maker's barn at Rindal Ski Museum. He has lots of beautiful skis that he has made and decorated inspired by the old ski types that Norwegian and Sami wooden ski makers made. Twice during the morning he will hold a small mini-seminar and show off his skis.
Between the mini-lectures, there will be an opportunity to look at the skis that Ole-Kristian has brought with him, and there will be activities at the barn where children and adults can try their hand at decorating skis with an old decoration technique, kolrosing.
Kolrosing is a decoration technique that has been used throughout history, in Norwegian and Sami crafts (duodji). It has been used on wood, bone and horn, and gives a beautiful and lasting result. We use a knife or wood carving iron and carve out patterns on the ski. Originally, charcoal was used as a dye, but you can also use pigment from bark, preferably mixed with a little oil.
Mini-lectures and activities are included in the museum's regular admission ticket.
