Rossini: Stabat Mater

Overview

13 November marks the150 year anniversary of the passing of Gioachino Rossini. In memory of the great composer, Oslo Oratorio Choir and Oslo Chamber Orchestra perform his Stabat Mater.

Stabat Mater is a Catholic hymn from the 13th century that has been set to music by numerous composers. It describes Maria's pain seeing her son on the cross. As one of the most famous composers of operas, Rossini used the emotional intelligence he honed writing operas when he wrote his Stabat Mater. His operatic genius and the sacred tradition were united here, the result is both heartfelt solemnity and theatrical drama.
