Overview

Ludovic Morlot and Gautier Capuçon bring a programme of exquisite and exciting music from their native France to Bergen.

Ludovic Morlot and Gautier Capuçon bring a programme of exquisite and exciting music from their native France to Bergen, culminating in one of the most spectacular orchestral showpieces of all: Saint-Saëns' mighty Organ Symphony.

Before that monumental piece, Capuçon plays music by twentieth-century France's master of sensuous imagery and technical refinement, Henri Dutilleux. Dutilleux's cello concerto Tout und monde lointain… was inspired by the poetry of Charles Baudelaire and is a work of light, flux and precision.

The concert opens with the piece Berlioz wrote in order to restore calm to his frantic life. But even the soothing overture Le corsaire eventually bubbles up with the sort of fiery passion that was never far from Berlioz's music, or his life.

«Capuçon was calmly charismatic throughout, conveying direction and life in small details like his tightly coiled pizzicato but also flourishing in the many quiet floating passages, which he rendered with uncommon clarity in stratospheric registers», The Boston Globe
