Hordaland Kunstsenter and Forsvarsbygg have the pleasure of welcoming you to Sculpture Park Bergenhus Festning! With the historic location of Bergenhus as a framework for an exhibition of contemporary art, the stage is set for a unique experience.
Art, when presented in public space, generates a dialogue with its surroundings. Bergenhus Festning as a site or surrounding can be described in multiple ways: as a historical fortress, an active military base, a recreational park, a tourist trap, a monument, a stage for music, celebration and ceremony. How do the artworks change the dynamics of the site, and what kind of interpretations of Bergenhus Festning are enabled by this temporary sculpture park?
Through an open call, Hordaland Kunstsenter invited four artists and one artist group to develop projects for Bergenhus Festning. For some of the artists, the context of the surroundings is their main subject, others have a material-based starting point and use traditional mediums such as ceramics, or utilise new technology such as 3D printing to develop their work. The exhibition also includes an invisible, yet smellable intervention, as well as a workshop resulting in a performance - promoting the idea that art in public space can be both physical and immaterial, conceptual and process based.
Hordaland Kunstsenter has a well-established program within Art and Public Space. Through the Sculpture Park Bergenhus Festning, we facilitate the production of new commissions - creating an opportunity for regional artists to experiment with work in the public domain.
Bergenhus Festning is open every day between 06:00 and 23:00, and is free to visit. You can find flyers with a map of the works and information either at the HKS reception or at the Festning site.
The exhibition at Bergenhus Festning is initiated by Forsvarsbygg and curated and organised by Hordaland Kunstsenter and is made possible with support from KORO, Vestland Fylkeskommune, Bergen Kommune and Sparebanken Vest.
