Silje Figenschou Thoresen's exhibition "Et stille og beskyttet farvand, de overliggende lag gik uforstyrret hen over den" (A quiet and protected water, the layers above it, passing undisturbed) brings innovative material and conceptual approaches into Astrup Fearnley Museet.
Thoresen's work draws upon Sámi design traditions emphasizing improvisation and the re-purposing of existing materials. Her practice is both an aesthetic investigation as well as a proposal for relating to the world in a more sensitive way. Objects often hover above the ground or are stacked precariously on top of one another in novel compositions, suggesting the possibilities that are inherent in the everyday. As disciplines such as architecture urgently integrate principles of reuse into new construction projects, Thoresen's work suggests that these strategies have a long history within indigenous communities.
