Sir András Schiff

A charismatic and uncompromising master pianist.
Hungarian-born British pianist Sir András Schiff was first recognised as a genius long ago. A Norwegian national newspaper called him ‘An Aladdin of the piano’ in 1978, and his recordings of Beethoven’s complete Piano Sonatas, released in the first decade of the twenty-first century, received overwhelming acclaim.
His choice of interpretation balances nevertheless on a razor’s edge. Is the sound distinct, clear and sharp or clattering and loud? Does his refusal to use the sustaining pedal when playing Bach make his counterpoint unusually clear or does it make the music one-dimensional and boring?
As a pianist András Schiff is daring and uncompromising, and could easily have made efforts to be better liked. The fact that he does not is greater reason to take him seriously and to be fascinated.
In Håkonshallen he will perform works by musical giants on the Steinway grand which he inaugurated at the 2016 Bergen International Festival.
