St. Olav Festival is one of Norways largest church- and culture festivals. The program offers a wide range of concerts, historical market, activities for children and services.
Olav Haraldsson fell in the battle of Stiklestad in 1030 while attempting to unite and christianize Norway. The body was saved from the battlefield and buried by Nidelva.
Olav's Church was built on the riverbank where Olav was buried in 1030. Shortly after miracles were experienced by Olav's remnants. He became worshipped as a saint and pilgrims from all over Europe came to the Olav's Mass in the Nidaros Cathedral.
St. Olav Festival continues a tradition which in recent years was reintroduced in 1962. The Nidaros Cathedral has a full program during these days and pilgrims from all over come to visit one of Northern Europe's few international pilgrim destinations.
