Stabat mater: from tears to tones

On Saturday 4 May, Nidaros Cathedral's Boys' Choir invites you to its spring concert in Nidaros Cathedral. Look forward to a wonderful work with beautiful melodies that will resonate for many days.

The work "Stabat Mater" is based on the medieval poem about the Virgin Mary's sorrow, which is among the most set church texts. Kim André Arnesen's interpretation is faithful to the original text, but expands the theme to include the universal pain of losing a child. This is expressed through the addition of two modern English poems: "A Mother's Prayer" by Euan Tait and an anonymous poem from a dying child, which together reflect both mother's and child's perspectives on loss and acceptance.

These texts create a bridge between past and present, and emphasize that the pain of loss is universal and timeless, regardless of language and culture. One of Arnesen's most outstanding characteristics is his ability to create melodies that are appealing and moving, which here reinforce the theme and enrich it with depth and nuances.

Together with a large orchestra consisting of professional musicians and the singing soloist Maria Moen Nohr, the Nidaros Cathedral Boys' Choir will bring this deeply felt work to life in Nidaros Cathedral.
