The International Women's League for Peace and Freedom (IKFF) in Trondheim invites
Symposium… with a focus on US bases in Norway
Thursday, March 27 at 1830-2100
Feministhuset in Trondheim (Kjøpmannsgt. 51)
Co-organizers are: Sosialistik Forum in Trondheim, Transform, No to Nuclear Weapons in Trondheim, No to Bases at Værnes and the Norwegian Communist Party (NKP) in Trondheim
At this symposium, the IKFF in Trondheim and the co-organizers want to gain more knowledge about what various issues surrounding US bases in Norway entail. We have invited four presenters to the symposium;
-Bitte Vatvedt. She represents the IKFF, is a journalist and former employee of NRK. She led the campaign "No to US bases" (as long as it existed), and has continued to work on the issue since then.
She will talk about how the SDC agreement not only entails nuclear weapons on Norwegian soil, but presupposes nuclear weapons. And she states: "It is high time that there is a meeting about the bases in Trondheim".
-Daniel Gudbrandsen former coordinator for ICAN Norway and now political advisor to No to Nuclear Weapons. He will lecture on the US bases related to the nuclear weapons danger.
-Karl-Erik Haug. He is a professor of modern history and head of the department at the Department of Modern Social History at NTNU. His research has mainly focused on various aspects of Norwegian foreign, security and defense policy with particular emphasis on Norway's relations with foreign nations.
He is a city council representative for the Conservative Party.
-Marielle Leraand, founder of the new party Peace and Justice (FOR).
She is a former deputy leader of RØDT and an activist from the women's movement and the anti-war movement.
Background to the symposium:
In February last year, Minister of Defense Bjørn Arild Gram (SP) signed an agreement with the United States that provides access to eight new military base areas. This is a year and a half after the Storting accepted the Supplementary Defense Cooperation Agreement (SDCA), which gave the US permission to operate from three air stations and one naval base. In total, there will be twelve bases. The bases are not part of NATO cooperation, but directly subordinate to the US.
The existence of the US bases has been brought to light with President Trump's actions regarding Greenland and the questions surrounding Norway's base policy are many.
Welcome.
The event is free.
Simple refreshments
