The Basement by 71 Bodies
tangible and intense. The Basement is a fictional setting based on real events, and makes the invisible visible.
This solo performance explores the dynamics that arise when power relations change. It is intuitive, and allows the body to speak through physical expression and freedom. An exercise in freedom, both personal and artistic. A freedom that requires work, courage and urgency to take a place beyond imposed limitations of what is acceptable, legitimate or beautiful.
The dance artist Daniel Mariblanca from Barcelona in Spain worked in the period 2016-2023 in the company Carte Blanche in Bergen. In 2016, he also created his own dance company, 71BODIES. Daniel is transgender, and 71BODIES is a transgender, inclusive dance and performance company.
“... to have full control over my body, but at the same time be fearless in my vulnerability. Exposing vulnerability as a strength. A process that required solitude in its creation, to understand how this journey can be something collective, something shared. At its core, this work is about liberation. Reality and fiction that can exist simultaneously. Blurring the lines between what is real and what has been created. To connect us through a common liberation, an inner revolution must take place.” - Daniel Mariblanca
