As the song goes: ‘Byen er Bergen og laget er Brann’ (The city is Bergen, and the team is Brann). But what is the story with Brann, and what are the people of Bergen really like? And what have they meant to one another?
We look at the relationship between the city and the team through the lens of five significant events in Brann’s history. Along the way, we have been inspired by what could be called the Brann anthem: The first line, Byen é Bergen og laget é Brann, stedet e stadion og syng alle mann (The city is Bergen, and the team is Brann, the place is the stadium, so everybody sing along) forms the framework for our exploration of the selected events.
This is not the complete history of either Brann or Bergen. But if we stop to consider some selected events from the past, we believe it is possible to identify some of the things that are distinctive to both the city and the team and the way they are connected. We will also take a brief look at the city and the history of the team from its formation to the present day, including the high points and the low points.
What would Bergen be without Brann? And is it possible to imagine Brann without Bergen? Maybe this is about passion and the enthusiasm of the people of Bergen? Or is it the irony, the self-depreciating chant ‘we’ll damn well do it, like we did in 1963’, that best captures the spirit of the city? Because the entire stadium and the entire city know that neither the city nor the team are as wonderful as we say.
We welcome you to join us on our exploration of the city and the team. Football and history has no borders.
