In association with the Bergen National Opera, the Orchestra takes centre stage in this production of Wagner's first mature opera The Flying Dutchman masterminded by renowned Spanish theatre collective La Fura del Baus and conducted by the in-demand Korean Eun Sun Kim.
Wagner's opera tells of a mysterious wanderer's arrival in a small town on the west coast of Norway and a local girl's unerring love and infatuation for him. The storm-tossed atmosphere of the work is established right from its gripping overture. What follows is an opera of blazing intensity and compelling urgency in which most of the wanderer Dutchman's torture and passion is heard in Wagner's thrilling orchestration.
Scottish bass-baritone Iain Patterson takes the role of the Dutchman while Norwegian soprano Elisabeth Teige sings the lovelorn Senta and fast-rising Norwegian tenor Bror Magnus Tødenes appears as the excitable steersman.
