đđTHE HERDS ARE COMING!
A gigantic herd of animals fleeing climate destruction will trample into Trondheim during Olavsfest 2025.
Man-made climate change has major consequences for our future existence on the planet. Not least, it affects wildlife, a number of species have already become extinct and even more are threatened.
We will get to dramatize and visualize this on a large scale when the global art project THE HERDS takes over Trondheim during Olavsfest 2025!
Over the course of three days, a large herd of life-size animal models, created from recycled materials, will trample through the city at various locations. And it won't necessarily go smoothly - these are animals fleeing climate change, perhaps they are scared and panicked, they are adapting and reacting to new surroundings. No one knows exactly what will happen until July 28th.
THE HERDS is the world's most ambitious art project about climate change, where the consequences are illustrated in a very sensual way.
Between April and August, the herd will travel 20,000 kilometers from the start in Kinshasa, Congo. On the way, they will visit 11 countries and major cities such as Lagos, Dakar, Marrakech, Barcelona, Paris, London, Manchester, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Stockholm - before ending up in Norway. On the way, the herd will grow, more and more endangered animal species will join. In Trondheim, the herd will consist of about 70-80 animals in a parade of several hundred meters through the city.
THE HERDS is initiated by the international production company The Walk Productions. In the summer of 2023, they turned Trondheim on its head when they visited OIavsfest with the three-meter-high doll of the refugee girl Little Amal.
Now they are thinking even bigger, more ambitious and spectacular with THE HERDS, and for the visit to Trondheim we are happy to have Rosendal Teater on board as a co-producer. Olavsfest engages broadly through this project. Local forces will be involved as puppeteers and builders and we include research and educational institutions, environmental and human rights organizations and other key players both in Norway and internationally.
The animal models in THE HERDS are designed by the Ukwanda Puppets and Designs Art Collective in South Africa. Each animal is made from recycled materials that are available in the area where they are made. The animals are zoologically lifelike, and will convey the power and beauty of nature: Proud, elegant, graceful, but also on high alert.
Join us when the magnificent herd comes to Trondheim 28-30 July and experience a magical and unique art project that inspires action!
