The Staff Band of Norwegian Armed Forces & Odd René Andersen - A Ray Charles Tribute

Big band evening at the Akershus fortress with the Staff band of Norwegian Armed Forces and Odd René Andersen.

The Staff band of Norwegian Armed Forces is joined by Odd René Andersen for this festive evening of a concert paying tribute to the legendary Ray Charles. Together with choir members and the Staff band of Norwegian Armed Forces under the direction of Lars Erik Gudim, it will be an unforgettable evening at Høymagasinet.

Ray Charles grew up in Greenville, Florida. He became blind at the age of six and attended a school for the blind in St. Augustine, Florida, where he studied music in particular. Around 1950, he led a trio heavily inspired by jazz pianist Nat "King" Cole, but gradually Charles moved in a more gospel-inspired direction. In 1955 he had great success with I've Got A Woman, and with his special synthesis of jazz, gospel and rhythm and blues, he became a style creator in soul music and a leading figure in African-American music. He demonstrated his versatility and his pioneering disdain for musical pigeonholes, not least in 1962, when he recorded a number of country songs and became a million-seller with the single I Can't Stop Loving You and the album Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music.
