A preview of the program for the orchestra's upcoming tour to Paris and Barcelona. Under the direction of Edward Gardner, the orchestra goes on tour to Paris and Barcelona. This afternoon, our faithful audience will get a taste of the touring program that begins with the Ligeti's Melody, composed on the occasion of the five-hundredth anniversary of the German painter Albrecht Dürer in 1971.

Richard Strauss' exquisite last four songs are a moving masterpiece and a moving farewell from an aging composer. In 1946 he lived in Switzerland, and although he was weak, he still composed. It was here that he read Joseph von Eichendorff's poem "Im Abendrot", in which an aging couple towards the end of their lives admire the sunset together and ask if this might be death. The poem inspired Strauss to a cycle of five songs, four of which were completed.

Lise Davidsen has unfortunately had to withdraw from the planned tour with the orchestra in December and thus also the concert in Bergen on 30 November. Due to the long and challenging Covid-19 situation, it has proved impossible to plan a tour within the time period that was originally discussed by Lise Davidsen and the orchestra. We are looking forward to new projects with Lise in the coming seasons.

We are happy that the Swedish soprano Malin Byström has agreed to join us on tour and here in the Grieg Hall before we leave. Here you can read more about Malin Byström.

The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky's dramatic and fateful Fourth Symphony, one of his most popular works.
