Trygve Seim Helsinki Songs

Overview

Jazz quartet looking to the east.
Undoubtedly, Trygve Seim could be said to have always looked to the east: from close collaboration with Finnish Jazz star Edward Vesala in the 90s, via Rumi’s old Persia, and to the Indian, Armenian, and Arabic musical heritage. On other occasions he has gone just as far as Finnskogen. Seim and the Helsinki Songs quartet linger somewhere between all these places.
Helsinki Songs’ music is mainly composed during Seim’s many music writing sessions in the Finnish capital. Moreover, the home towns of the quartet’s members – Tallin, Eidsvoll, Helsinki, and Oslo – make up a geographical axis with Helsinki as some sort of focal point.
Trygve Seim has worked with small and large ensembles alike and is a musician who always seeks new paths. He has become a significant figure in modern Norwegian jazz history with groups like Airamero, Oslo 13, and The Source, and not least with his own influential Trygve Seim Ensemble. In 2016 he released Rumi Songs, nominated for the Norwegian Grammy Award, with singer Tora Augestad.
The band delivers modern quartet jazz with a poetic core and a hint of melancholia, where the musicians are given plenty of space for embellishing Seim’s original songs. And beyond sing the woods.
