UCI Road World Championships Bergen, Norway 2017

It will be the biggest event ever organised in Western Norway. See the most famous cyclists in the world close up, watch great sporting feats and experience the buzz around the event, when all eyes will be on Western Norway!

The UCI Road World Championships will be the biggest summer sporting event ever held in Norway, and the northernmost championships ever. The championships will comprise 12 races over nine days of competition and will bring together more than 1,150 cyclists from 80 participating nations. Crowds of around 500,000 are expected to watch the races, and more than 300 million will follow the championships on TV.

RACE TO CELEBRATE The vision of the UCI Road World Championships in Bergen 2017 is to host a spectacular, inspiring and popular event. With its slogan 'Race to Celebrate', Bergen 2017 aims to engage the whole world, not just through the sporting performances, but also by organising fun activities for the crowds along the route, events for children and recreational cyclists and by focusing on public health. The UCI Road World Championships will be an event for everyone.

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT: Locals and visitors are encouraged to leave their cars at home and to plan their transport arrangements well in advance. Askøy will also be affected during the first weekend of the championships while Sotra and Øygarden will be affected on the final weekend.

The race routes in Bergen will be closed to ordinary traffic from 8.30 to 19.00. They will not be closed quite as long as this on a few days. Bergen city centre will be closed to all traffic 24/7. It will not be possible to drive into or out of Bergen city centre all day every day during the championships.

It will not be possible to drive the race routes or cross them while they are closed to traffic. People on foot and cyclists can cross the routes at designated points, mainly where there are pedestrian crossings. Guards will help people to cross when it is safe to do so. You can find more information about traffic management here.

Map: The roads that will be used as race routes are closed to all traffic. A map has been produced that shows how traffic will mostly be affected in Bergen during the UCI Road World Championships, when many roads will be used as cycling routes, primarily from 8.30 to 19.00. The situation differs from day to day. You can find a map for each day here.

Download a useful map with fan zones, hospitality areas and more here.

Public transport: All of the bus services to and from Bergen city centre will be rerouted before the World Championships start, and many of the stops in the city centre will not be in use. Bergen bus station will be the public transport hub in the city centre. The last stop on Bergen Light Rail will be Nonneseter (which is the closest stop to the railway station and the bus station). You can find up-to-date information about public transport services during the World Championships on Skyss's website.

Airport bus: During the UCI Road World Championships, the only stop made by airport buses in the city centre will be the bus station. The exceptions will be the night-time departures to Bergen Airport from Dreggsallmenningen (Radisson Blu Royal Hotel) at 3.25, 4.00, 4.45 and 5.30, which will start at Dreggsallmenningen, and stop near the Tourist Information beside Lido restaurant and at the bus station. They will not stop in Olav Kyrres gate.

Taxis: Many of the taxi ranks will be closed for parts of or whole days. New temporary taxi ranks will therefore be set up. The taxi rank at Bryggen and the railway station will only be in use from 19:00 to 08:30. The taxi rank at the bus station and the Strandkai Terminal (next to the Tourist Information) is available 24 hours a day. All pick up and drop off points are marked on the map available here.

Parking: Parking is prohibited along the race routes 24/7. Parking will also be prohibited in certain other streets to ensure that buses and the emergency services can reach their destinations. These restrictions will start a few days before the World Championships begin and will probably be in force until a few days after the championships.

Motorhomes: There are several areas where motorhomes can park. You can find information about extra parking for motorhomes during the UCI Road World Championships at the Bergen2017.no website.

For tour buses: For tour buses coming to Bergen there will be a designated parking. Information about parking, pick up and drop off points is avilable here.

Access to the Hurtigruten and Fjord Line Terminal: Access via old Nygårdsbro and then Møhlenpris (Tormøhlens gt) all the way to the terminal. Applies to both bus and private car. Return via Nygårdstunnelen, which will be open at all times, in the direction of Danmarksplass or Åsane.

Leisure boats: The harbor for small boats in Bergen city center (Vågen) will be closed 15/9 at midnight, and it will open again 24/9 midnight. Alternative marina will be at Marineholmen in the heart of the Puddefjord. GC Rieber offers 100-150 seats for small boats during the period.

The days before and after the World Championships: Preparations for and tidying up after the event will mean that the streets will be closed for short periods in the days before and after the championships. The entire circuit in Bergen will be fenced in, and stands, stages and other facilities will be built in the city centre. The finish line for the UCI Road World Championships will be at Festplassen square. Christies gate, from Småstrandgaten to Lars Hilles gate, will therefore be closed to all traffic from Thursday 14 September up to and including Tuesday 26 September. More information to follow.

Areas particularly affected in Bergen Large parts of Bergen will be affected by the championships. Some areas will be completely or partly closed to incoming and outgoing traffic from 8.30 to 19.00 during the UCI Road World Championships. People are advised not to drive in other areas, due to the risk of congestion and tailbacks. See the map.
