Overview

Japanese physicist Ukichiro Nakaya was captivated by the beauty of snow crystals, and photographed them as part of his research. In 1936, Nakaya developed the world's first synthetic snow crystal. The exhibition Letters Sent from Heaven shows photographs of snow crystals and electrostatic discharges, taken during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s by Nakaya and his colleagues. They are scientific documents, but are also characterized by a distinct artistic expression. Also included in the exhibition are two films describing Nakaya's research. One of them, Frost Flower, was created in conjunction with the first ICSI (International Commission on Snow and Ice) conference in Oslo in August 1948. The photographs included in Letters Sent from Heaven were first shown at the Sapporo International Art Festival in Japan, curated by Ryuichi Sakamoto.
